I've been talking with friends and they think im crazy but right about now I think its better for us that sweden ties or wins against spain. If that happens we control our own destiny, win both games and we're in. I'd personally rather control our own destiny and win both games 1-0, then counting on luck and hoping/relying on another team to tie or lose. Cause if spain wins on saturday we can win both our last games and still not make it through. The only other thing that would be a lot better is for spain to smash sweden like 4-0 or 5-0, cause if spain wins 1-0 or 2-0 it does nothing for us, because i cant see our team scoring more then 2 goals against russia.
So I think us greeks should be cheering and hoping for sweden to atleast tie on saturday. What does everyone else think about sweden vs spain??? |

Spain wins......we have a much better chance of Sweden messing up than us winning anyways....
If Spain beats Sweden, and we somehow miraculously beat Russia, we can get through with a point if Russia beats Sweden, which they can. Remember, Russia came out very determined and strong against us in 2004 even though they were out. Theres that, plus Arshavin will be back for Russia. That will be big. They dont want to go home without some pride, and even if they end up tieing, Ill still be happy that we lost it on a tiebreaker with 4 points rather than what is likley (0 points and last). In the Euro plus minus rule goes out the window, its head to head that counts. So we need Sweden to lose both games or for Spain to lose both of their remaining games and we get a win and tie or to be safe two wins and no bullshit. If sweden and Greece end up with 4 points both we lose because they beat us even if we score more goals.

If the sweds beat spain then the spanish still need to fight to progress . If Spain beats sweden {which they sould} then the spanish game will be easier for us to get a result. Then if we beat Russia they will have 2 loses and will look to save face by trying to beat the sweds like they did with us in 04. We must win . If we win both our games then it dosn't matter what happens . Thats the best scenerio in my opinion. Will it happen ? NO , at best a win and a tie and some luck. Keep in mind guys that we must beat Russia first and see the result from Sweden - Spain before we talk about this scenario.
A Greece win over Russia and a Spain win over Sweden is what I'm hoping for, then you will have this: Spain 6 pts (qualified for the quarterfinals) Sweden 3 pts Greece 3 pts Russia 0 pts (eliminated) After 2 games |

Even with 6 points in 2 games, Spain would not be automatically qualified. They would be under the threat of a possible though unlikely scenario. Look below
Results Spain-Russia 4-1 Greece-Sweden 0-2 Spain-Sweden 1-0 Greece-Russia 1-0 Sweden-Russia 1-0 (or 2-0 or 3-0 or whatever but a Swede win) Greece-Spain 2-0 In that case, Sweden, Greece and Spain would be all 3 with 6 points. That means that the goals scored against Russia would not count as head to head to head records (even among 3 teams) prevail. Final standings of the 3-horse race would be: ------------points-----goal difference----goals for---goals against Sweden-----6-------------1------------------2---------------1 Greece------6-------------0------------------2---------------2 Spain--------6---------- -1 -----------------1---------------2 Very very unlikely!!! And there a few other options we could think of... Bottom line is all these calculations don't matter. I agree with you mate, if Spain have already qualified they may not be as determined to win against us...Either way we gonna av to go out all guns blazing for these last 2 games, no-matter what...

I would also prefer that outcome but the one danger in facing a team coming off of a loss is that they too will also have their destiny in their hands and will try to take advantage of it. Then it become a game of 'who wants it more.'

Aww Shit isn't all of this speculation driving everyone mad or what? Its so bad we let that first game slide away so badly ,I honestly thought we would draw with the swedes when they got the first goal . But thats in the past lets just hope that Greece wins against russia tommorow or were gonna be screwed , lets not worry so much about the other scores yet because we need a win first . Spain are fav's to beat sweden but who knows the swedes might be so high from the last victory that they stifle spain out of a victory and tie them or even win by a last minute goal or PK..
