Barcelona Targets Basinas 24 Dec 2004 19:03:00

By Vasilis Kalpinos

Barcelona has set its sights at Angelos Basinas. According to articles in the Spanish Press, the Catalonian team, which has a great deal of problems in the midfield area, is looking for solutions, and the Greek midfielder currently playing for Panathinaikos would be a good solution. Angelos Basinas has been recommended to Barcelona, and in fact, the Spanish side is currently examining the possibility of taking on his contract now, during the January transfer season. Basinas is the second Greek player to interest Barcelona, as a short while ago they also expressed interest in the captain of the Greek national team, Thodoris Zagorakis.

wow, but even with Barca's problem in the DM position, you think he would ever get playing time, especially over home-grown Xavi? it would be cool to have a Greek one of the best teams in the world though

I think Basinas could get plenty of playing time at Barca, if he regains his form of a couple years ago. They've been hit hard by injuries all across the defensive line, meaning Marquez has had to fill in there. With him dropping back, Xavi has been forced to play in a very defensive midfield position to cover for the three fowards. If this goes through, however, Basinas would fill that role and Xavi would be allowed more attacking freedom up the pitch. this could work out very well.

So now Basinas is being linked to both England and Spain, but we need him at PAO. He is key in our midfield. If he gets playing time with Barca, I see no reason why he won't go, but I hope he chooses to stay and see out his contract with us, and hopefully renew it in the summer.

If he goes in January he will get plenty of PT as teams that make purchases is Jan do so to fill a gap somewhere in the team. Also it will allow Barca to rest players in the league as Basinas is Ineligle to play for them in Europe this year. If he does go the big test will be next season where they may go for a big DM signing...and he will then be let on the outer as they may use Basinas as a stop gap solution for the rest of the season...unless he steps up and does the business.

If he does go i hope he does well i think he is a great player...with a lot to offer.

Two factors will influence Basinas' decision (if Barcelona indeed does decide to acquire him).
Firstly, money. If they offer him a nice fat check, that'll be a major plus for him.
Secondly, playing time. I doubt the guy wants to go and sit on the bench for the rest of his career. Once again, the only thing that might make the bench acceptable is money - a lot of it.
Although I suspect that he would get decent playing time seeing how shit Braca is in the middle.

I hope he stays with PAO he is needed at the club. Even if this move will be great for Him and Greece i want him at PAO. If we get Anderson we will have a hell of a midfield at PAO.

Lot of 'talk' about him going to barca. If he does go I hope he plays regularly. Don't want to see another one our guys riding benches (if they are lucky) alla Karagounis. Indeed, if Basinas does make the trip to la liga, he needs to make an immediate impact so that he can stay in the lineup when all injuries come back.
