History:

Founded in 1908 the football team is the oldest of all the Panathinaikos club’s sports sections. They play in the Super League Greece and play their home games at the Olympic Stadium - Spiros Louis. Panathinaikos is one of the most successful Greek football clubs of all time, winning 19 league titles. In 1971 they were European Cup finalists, losing 2-0 to Ajax at Wembley Stadium. They remain the only Greek club that has reached a European final. In 1985, Panathinaikos reached the European Cup semifinals, where they were thrown out by Liverpool F.C. (4-0, 0-1, aggregate 5-0). The club reached the semifinal stage of the UEFA Champions League in 1996, when they faced Ajax, recording a surprising first-leg away victory (0-1). However, they suffered a crushing 0-3 defeat on the second leg and were thus denied entry to the final once more. In the 2002 UEFA Champions League, Panathinaikos reached the quarter-finals, losing 3-2 on aggregate to FC Barcelona. Currently (September 2006) Panathinaikos is the highest ranked Greek club in the official UEFA Team Ranking

Despite their long presence on the Champions League groups, Olympiacos has yet to win a single away game. On 31 away games in total they have 0 wins, 7 ties and 24 defeats, they tend to be a strong home team though. Olympiacos is also the team to suffer the worst defeat in Champions League history by suffering a 7-0 defeat in Turin against Juventus in 2003. ----Wiki laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif wacko.gif

So we're playing that game???

"Miracle" Became a Nightmare!
16 Mar 2005 23:25:00
By Stathis Petropoulos

The miracle may have not come in Newcastle, but Olympiacos did not show in any case that the trip there had the above as an aim! In Olympiacos worst performance this year, it did not make itself present in Givens goal area and suffered a defeat by 4-0. The bad picture of the "reds" was apparent from the beginning, since Olympiacos was frivolous defensively, non-existent in the centre and without a serious attack, which resulted to not showing the smallest resistance to Newcastle, who just sealed its qualification in the next round in the UEFA, with two goals by Shearer, one by Dyer and one by Bowyer.

Tragic Start

A week before we could have been saying that Olympiacos, with nine players, fought a straight game against Newcastle, but today even though it had 11 players, the team played as if it had nine players in the pitch, and maybe even less! Disconnected and with bad choices in defense it did not mange in any point of the first half to cut Newcastle and thus the goal seemed a matter of time for the "miners." The time it took was about 17 minutes when the British team took advantage of the "reds" mistakes in the defense, and opened the score, placing the seal in the certain qualification to the next phase. The British knowing what to expect did not leave a meter of pitch to Djordjevic, and this lead to the collapse of Olympiacos. At the same time, Kaffes did not receive the passes he should have, while Maric was also impeccably blocked off by two players.

Betrayed by Defense

If the lack of choices in the centre was not enough, Olympiacos was also betrayed by its good line, offense. The artificial offsides worked well but the side covers went for a walk In Nikopolidis area, which was filled by players, the Greek offenders cut the ball wrong and allowed second chances which resulted to Dyer making a "magical" attempt and opening the score for the home team. Earlier, in the 14 Butt had made a strong shot at the goalpost, while until the second goal, which completed the first half, Souness players had another three classic chances to double their score. In the 29 Anatolakis did not catch up with Shearer, who faced on his own with Nikopolidis, kicked the ball offside, while at the 38 in a corner shot, Shearer once again caught an excellent header but saw the ball go slightly out.

Shipwreck in Newcastle

The shipwreck of the first half was completed in the 44, when Newcastles top players combined their powers. Dyer entered from the side in Olympiacos area and with Vallas allowing him plenty of space, turned the ball in the heart of the "reds" defense and Anatolakis in his attempt to block passed the ball onto Shearer, who scored 2-0 besides Anatolakis and Mavrogenidis desperate attempts. The hope that the second half will change towards something positive for the "reds" was lost soon. Bajevic put up Djordjevic as a secret offender and changed Castillo at the back, in a formation that did not offer anything, but Olympiacos first entrance in Givens area. In the 60 the Serb was substituted by Okkas and Olympiacos had made its first shot in the game with Kaffes, which was the biggest accomplishment since the 54 when the win became a triumph with Bowyer scoring the third goal for Newcastle.

Olympiacos Throws in the Towel

Bajevics next substitution was Filippakos in the place of Castillo, with Okkas taking his original position, and the young midfielder taking action right in the centre of the pitch. Before he could show his tricks, Shearer with a smart ball by Jenas passed Nikopolidis, before he scored his personal second goal and the fourth and final for his team, which was 4-0. It became apparent that the defeat would crush Bajevic and his team, and the coach tried to rest his players, since he substituted Stoltidis with Taralidis. Before the final whistle, Olympiacos only attempted a shot by Okkas in the extra time, when Newcastle had given up on the match, and made Given block into a corner. This was the only good opportunity for Olympiacos in a match that is best be forgotten.

But see vazelakia.. when we remind you of things in our forums, its current news.. not stuff from 1972.. its funny how pao has to go to the 70s to show how good they are.. all olympiakos has to do is raise the prwtathlima like they do every year in may.. and i know you guys aren't cool with that, but we're champions.. and you guys are going to eastern europe once again to play UEFA cup.. sorry boys.. like they say.. better luck next year
