Thought I might as well given this is fast becoming flavour of the month material. I am seriously interested to hear everyones views on the subject. I loved and grew up on the NSL but I still follow every match of the A-League with great enthusiasm.

I just thought I'd start with a question (particularly to PAOKARA). How can we account for the falling crowds, interest and football generally at Perth? (Bigger in the NSL) The similar, if not smaller average crowds at Adelaide (even now when it is a one city team)? The similar situation at NZ? The still similar situation at Newcastle (even with "big names" at the club?)?

Just thought I'd get the ball rolling.

Maybe on of the mods should pin this topic?

Adelaide United averaged around 12500 in their final season of the NSL.

Last year they averaged 11000, and this year they are averaging around 11500.

So pretty much the same shit, give or take 1000... Adelaide United pulled a sell out this year against Sydney, so its not as if the club is losing its supporters.

Whats funny about Perth is they were also drawing shit crowds in their last season in the NSL. Like just 7500 at home against South Melbourne, 6800 vs Sydney United, 7900 vs Northern Spirit, 9700 vs Adelaide United, 8700 vs Newcastle. They are also bandwagoners over there... they dont come out when they are doing bad. After a good run they pulled in around 10000 vs Melbourne the other week, when their average is approx 8000. They have also had off field dramas.

Newcastle didnt win for 13 games, obviously their crowds will be crap. Yet they are still getting over 5000 a game, last year they had around 8000. Now they won a few games on the trot, expect bigger crowds.

Central Coast crowds are up..

New Zealand are a joke, but they were a joke in the NSL too..

Melbourne Victory - Unbelievable

Queensland Roar - Fucking fantastic

Sydney FC - Fantastic

Looking great fellas..

Football is flying in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland. Has bigtime potential in gosford...steady in Newcastle and Perth... and a disaster in NZ.

I will take that from a league barely 2 years old!

Personally I think the Sydney situation is a bit of a joke. Are you telling me a city of 4 million people can't have 2 or 3 teams?

I say we bring back Sydney Olympic and Sydney United, along with Sydney FC, (maybe APIA in the future). At least that way we can truly call the league national since we will have both wogs and bandwaggoner aussie converts following the league. Imagine the crowds for an Olympic vs Sydney FC match?

What do guys reckon about this mixing idea? (PS. Also room for Hellas in Melbourne)

So by involving clubs that are specific to a certain minority of people....it would make the league more 'national'?

The whole point of the a-league is to have clubs attractive to both 'aussies' & 'wogs'.

With Sydney FC in the fold, how many fans would sydney olympic pull? a few thousand?? APIA??? You might aswell keep New Zealand then.

tongue.gif In all honesty I only want them so that the league can have an easy - beat derby for Olympic laugh.gif Also my mate goes for APIA so it gives me a chance to get him on the "wog 4 da A league" wagon.

In response to PAOKARA, I can see the point of the A-League sides but in all honesty they dont attract ANY wogs.

Adelaide Utd have a large 'wog' following, as do Melbourne Victory, Newcastle and Perth Glory. Not too sure about Sydney FC...

Considering there are not many ethnics in qld, and gosford seems like a more 'aussie' area.... I would say Wogs do get behind the a-league.

Yes that is evident from the huge A-League following in these forums dry.gif I see plenty of wogs at Perth games. The shed is full of wogs chanting "You'll never walk alone". Brings a tear to the eye of all migrants.

Perth Glory's mix of wogs and aussies in their early years was the reason why they had such an unbelievable following.... especially the italians got behind the glory.

Which proves the point that the A-League has discarded and done nothing for the migrant followers of football. Congratulations on contradicting yourself. Early years = NSL tongue.gif

No, thats the reason why the stayed in....

I didnt contradict anything considering hardly any aussies followed any of the ethnic clubs.

Great article, read it a while back. One of only a few problems with the A-League.

Its not too bad, 7/20 of our boys are full time professionals...and most are 17-19 years old.

May I add I used to play juniors with Peter Eleftherakis..

Gboots is right PAOKARA_04

Without Darbys the (g)A - League is nothing... It needs to grow, it needs passion... and remember mate, the NSL attracted far larger crowds in its golden era!

Im happy with week one though. The two games in between were quality.
