I hope we can use this forum to exchange information about Greek football teams in Australia and elsewhere in the diaspora.
In Victoria, Australia we have the Victorian Premier league where there are 5 Greek teams in a competition composed of 12 teams.
We may have a 6th team being promoted to the VPL for 2011.

I'm about to go watch Hedileberg united (Greek team) against Hume city, in the semi final. Winner plays Richmond for a spot in the final, loser is out.
A-ALEXANDROS!!

Tough times for Greek background teams in South Australia, two teams were relegated and as of next season there will be no teams in top flight.

Adelaide Olympic (Premier League - 2nd div semi-pro comp)
Adelaide Cobras (Premer League, just dropped from Super League) - Cypriot.
West Adelaide Hellas (State League - dissapointingly relegated from Premier League)

Ahh good old West Adelaide!!

In Sydney - Sydney Olympic just survived relegarion from the NSW Premier League but saw big movement off the field for the club and a re-newed interest. Just sucked they didnt do well on the field.

West Sydney Berries - Relegated from NSW Premier League to the State League Division One for next season

Yes, sad how the mighty have fallen.

I can remember West Adelaide won one of the first (if not the first?) NSL championships many years ago.....with John Kosmina playing back then (not that that's anything to boast about)

Don't worry boys, when the A-League folds, Lowy will have NO CHOICE but to bring back the 'ethnic clubs'.

If you look at the ethnicity of the crowds now in the A-League, there is still quite a considerable number of wogs who go (I won't put a percentage on it, but I can tell).

Would like to revive this list again. Health problems leading to surgery did not allow me to contribute.

I was wondering what happened to you after I saw who started this thread a couple of years ago......it's been a while since you posted.

Hope all is OK now.

I had bowel reversal surgery in early Oct 2010, saw the surgeon for post-op check up where everything appeared fine. Within a few weeks until xmas eve last year, I was admitted to the Emergency Room with bowel obstructions. They would keep me for a couple of days for observation before sending me home. On xmas eve I presented again to the ER and had my long awaited operation on xmas day. The best xmas present one could ever have.

There is no substitute in having good health. When you're in hospital waiting for surgery, you see how vulnerable and mortal we are. I am glad it is over and ready to go.

Thank you for asking how I am.

Heidelberg Alexandros are about to be relegated from the victorian premier league.

The standards have dropped big time also.

Heidelberg was one of the biggest clubs in the country in the early NSL days. Now they're dropping to the paddock leagues in Victoria.

People may not agree, but the sad thing is this can happen to any club, including S Melb. This year they didn't even make the finals in the VPL. What's next?

We talk about SM being admitted to the AL. As time passes this is becoming more and more unlikely, and they seem to be shrinking as a club.....that might eventually disappear. One day people might be saying S Melb who?? I hope not, but that's the way it looks to be heading.

^^

+1. It was bad for the game when they got booted out of the NSL to begin with, and that rivalry being finished pseudo killed off a lot of fan interest in the NSL.

The thing is the state leagues are that bad below VPL that clubs like South and Heidelberg will more than likely go straight back up again and end up in the VPL, so they need to really entrench themselves and make a name for being a dominant force in the VPL. The facilities are miles ahead of most state league clubs (heidelbergs less so than SM's) but the thought process is the same.

Did I mention that I have played under lights at the Olympic Village? wink.gif
