Former world number one tennis star Justine Henin has retired from the sport for the second time due to a recurring elbow injury.
The Belgian, 28, announced her retirement on her website, saying that during the Australian Open, her elbow had been injured. She went on to say that in recent months, she has had constant pain and doctors have advised her that her elbow is too fragile, meaning that she cannot continue playing tennis at the highest level. Henin who was winner of seven Grand Slam titles during her career, first retired from tennis in 2008 when she was the number one ranked player in the world. She later returned to the women’s tour in January last year. On her first Grand Slam back, she reached the Australian Open final but injury struck at Wimbledon when she suffered a fractured ligament in her elbow. Henin, renowned for her stylish backhand, began the 2011 season by leading her country to the Hopman Cup final, winning all her matches. At the Australian Open, she was victorious over India’s Sania Mirza and the UK’s Elena Baltacha before succumbing, in what turned out to be her final professional match, to Russian world number 26 Svetlana Kuznetsova. Henin’s first Grand Slam victory was the 2003 US Open where she defeated Belgian rival Kim Clijsters. She won the US Open for the second time in 2007, as well as winning the 2004 Australian Open and the French Open four times. The only Grand Slam she did not win was Wimbledon, where she was runner-up in 2001 and 2006. Henin also claimed Olympic gold in 2004, defeating Amelie Mauresmo in the final. http://www.discountvouchers.co.uk/news/138393535.html I didn't really like her, but she had a beautiful game and she was a great champion. It's sad to see players leave the game due to an injury Womens tennis has lost a very important player. |
