Papastathopoulos hit with two-match ban By George Georgakopoulos Greece coach Fernando Santos received a blow on May 13 as UEFA informed the Greek federation that central defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos had been slapped with a two-match suspension after receiving a red card for fouling Michael Mifsud at Malta in March. The AC Milan star will not only miss the national team’s next match at home against Malta on June 4, but also the crucial game against Israel in Tel Aviv on September 2. Reports suggest that this development is taking Schalke star Kyriakos Papadopoulos ever closer to the national team. The 19-year old had a great season in Germany with the club that reached the semifinals of the Champions League. Meanwhile Santos is making his plans not only for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Malta at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, but also for the friendly against Ecuador in New York on June 7. The match, which replaces the friendly that had been planned against Italy, will take place at the Citi Field Stadium in the US metropolis. Foul occurs at 4:40 This post has been edited by plato-ny: May 13 2011, 10:59 PM |

That's bad news. I think it's imperative that Kyriakos Papadopoulos joins this team and starts against Malta. That way he can get a NT game under his belt and move on to Israel with confidence. I just hope we don't see Vyntra or Moras vs Malta, because it would waste a perfect opportunity for the young star to get his feet wet.

I also agree that this is bad news. We could have used him in these two matches where we need to get 6 points from.

Bad news but good news, maybe Kyriakos Papadopoulos get some starting time. Papadop has been used as a stopper as of late at Schalke 04 but that does not matter he can easily cover for Papastathopoulos.
Eventually i would like to see them both working together in our defence. [ This post has been edited by WOLVERINE: May 14 2011, 02:33 PM |

Definitely bad news it`s always a huge loss not having Sokratis on the pitch playing for Hellas and i`m sure he is an automatic starter for everyone`s starting lineup but seriously, all of you in here need to calm down. I would be nervous if we had to play a Netherlands or Spain without Sokratis in the back, or that big 'euro' home qualifier game against Croatia that will probably decide first and second spot in the group, I would then understand. But seriously man up a little all of you..we are playing Malta for fucks sake (at home in Greece) and Israel on the road. Greece has many players to replace Sokratis for these two matches and these players can get the job done. Greece should easily defeat Malta playing in Greece and worst case scenario draw Israel on the road. Israel is actually in its lowest form we have seen them in many years/qualifiers. Even a victory for Greece in Israel is not really impossible even though the Greek national team is going through a huge transition phase with many young players. They can still get the job done.

Red Devil - "Man Up"....loive that and it is exactly what many need to here
Exactly. All Greeks both in Greece and abroad need to "Man Up". We have such a defeatist attitude. we get into this self perpetuating rut and just whine and moan. "Man Up". Couldn't have said it better megale. Some posters in these forums need to take heed of this advice. We are Greeks FFS.....stand up for what you are and not run and hide when things get hard. A true Greek shows what they are when there are challenges. Sorry I had to get this off my chest. Thanks RD -------------------- ![]() "HELLENES: REFUSE RESIST. SAY NO TO THE "BANKSTERS". It will be weird having 2 Papadopoulos as centre backs!
I think Santos will probably go for experience with Moras who is probably got more games under his feet now. |

These days, I don't think it's a big loss if we don't have him--he's been riding the bench all season at Milan, and clearly has his head f'ed up too much to play with any kind of confidence. This may not translate to his NT performances, but I don't see how it can't.

@ 'Chris Kiato'
Rehhagel would, but Santos shouldn't. If he starts Moras over Kpaps vs Malta, it will be a big mistake that could hurt us in the long run. |

KP has never played for Ethniki. You cant just chuck him in and expect to gel and play with confidence. I would bring him on in the second half. But that is assuming Moras is fit and in form.

I agree with you Chris. K.pap has not even played a friendly with the NT. I don't think Santos will though him into the deep end like that. |

The team doesn't gel and play with confidence in the first place...I say put him in, he's our best defender at the moment not to be given an opportunity yet. And I'm sure he'll play with more strength and confidence than half the guys we'll have out there. Moras shouldn't play over him just because he has more appearances...like that really matter vs. Malta anyways lol Papadopoulos was a key part in Schalke's success in the Champions League this year, and Moras helped Bologna achieve what? -------------------- The end justifies the means |

That's what I mean...Malta is easier than a friendly. It's the perfect opportunity to get his feet wet.

I disagree Chris Kiato, I believe that Kpaps could be thrown right in and he won't even look out of place.
This kid grew by leaps and bounds this year and is more than ready for the National Team. Tziolis I believe is getting very close also which is also great news. Keep Katsouranis and Karagounis off the pitch please!!!!! Makynia out! |
