I go this Greek bar, whenever someone by accident flicks on to Mega and the Turkish Soap opera is on with Greek subs, everyone instantly gets disgusted - old and young alike and we have to quickly change the channel. Why do they persist? Even when I am in Greece no one watches it..

Because it's cheaper to buy Turkish shows, rather than produce own.
Besides, I think it's pretty popular among old ladies. They don't seem to care about if it's Turkish or not. |

Really? I remember as a kid we had american soaps, south american...these Turkish ones in Turkish are cheaper and more popular? I really believe something else is going on.. I don't think there is a need for old Greek women to see how muslims handle their fictional lives from across the Aegean. I think you plonk an old Greek lady in front of the TV she will watch pretty much anything as long as it is not MAD.

I don't know how it is where you live, but in the mainland in Greece, both young and old watch them. I can't remember what the name is of the one that's most popular, but even my mom watches it. She can relate more to it than american shows and if you think of it, it's quite logical.

Really, I think we actually live more like Italians than Turks. I remember when i was in Turkey, the village was having a celebration because young Ahmet got his letter to do his military service..that was broken up however by the loud call to prayer and everyone evacuated into the Mosque. I somehow feel an American Soap is closer to Greece..a culture that hires Filipino nannies/cleaners en masse, dressing well, lots of affairs, showing off when they can and generally not too religious.
What is even more funny is the Turkish soaps attempt to copy other soaps from around the world in many aspects, esp countries with more free expression, like the US. So what Mega are showing is Turks pretending to be more western in Soaps. Only in Greece! When I go I stay in Livadia and Orchomenos - no one watches them there I know, however when I was young, people - young and old would eat lunch fast to watch the Bold and the Beautiful at around 1.30pm.. You have to understand that say Constantinople is far more western in their ideologies and everyday life than the rest of Turkey. I don't need to tell you why?
Look at it this way. They wouldn't have those shows if they didn't have any viewers. |

What you said makes no sense. These Turkish soaps take place in the Turkish countryside. Ask your mum. You are trying too hard to take the politically correct route here and it is making the place smell.
Mega does not need viewers for its Turkish soaps./ There is something else going on. Many non communists have already said the same in Greece. Just asked my cousin on Facebook chat: Vite ****: why does mega show turkish soap operas? Costa Monachos: if you want me to answer you in Greek.....two words Γιατι γαμιετε This post has been edited by Reaper the Pure: Apr 8 2012, 05:46 AM -------------------- ![]() |

Well, you already seem to have the answer to your own question, so why do you ask?
"You are trying too hard to take the politically correct route here and it is making the place smell." The only thing that smells here is your racism and bigotry! Nice try though! |

Well, you already seem to have the answer to your own question, so why do you ask? I wanted to see what people thought. If I wanted a bullshit politically correct attempt, with misinformation, some dog shit about constantinople thrown in for good measure from a swedish socialist, I would have asked specifically. But ey, I was always taught to play the hand I was dealt and that is what is now documented on here for all time. -------------------- ![]() |

Wow! How nice of you to make up stories. I never stated personal opinions or political stance. Why do you need to make it an issue of politics and why do you get so worked up and trying to provoke me?
I merely stated why it might be like this. You want my opinion? It's about money, plain and simple. These shows attract viewers, people watch them. There's no hidden religious or political agenda behind it. This post has been edited by porman: Apr 8 2012, 06:13 AM |

you must be pretty high if you think that no one in greece watches them, why should it matter where it is from? if the audience enjoys it

ANT1 play one too, not just mega. I can't watch more than one minute, it's a pretty awful sounding language...
