The thing that pisses me off about Pele is the whole sense of entitlement, that he is the best. Arrogance. He came out with this ludicrous claim yesterday:

Don't worry about Pele. His first was a man so her has no cred.

Messi: Ronaldo, you are a POUSTI!

This picture says it all for me. Ronaldo a finger puppet & Messi just a regular guy!

It looks more like Ronaldo is talking while the picture was taken and Messi is listening to him.

Another question still to be embarked on. Ronaldo has dominated both the physical English game and the skilfull Spanish one.

Would Messi be able to hack it in England?

Hey, I know it is stupid to say that Neymar is better than Messi, but, it is a promise of good future football. The kid has serious skill at least against Brazilian competition. We shall soon see how he fares against Europeans.

Excellent point that. We will never know ofcourse as Messi is at Barca for life. I wouldn't put it past Ronaldo to move on again though to Milan , Chelsea, Man City, Russian team etc anyone who can afford his statospheric wages.

As for Neymar, sure looks like a freak talent this guy. Hope I dont see him teaming up with either of those two in Real or Barca as that just wouldn't be fair anymore.

The thing people must remember when comparing Maradona and pele with today's players is that in a match we see 20 different camera angles of Messi, super slow motion replays, etc, etc, this stuff wasn't around in the 60s and 80s.

I didn't see Pele, but those who did will say he was the best. I saw Maradona, and if he were playing today, with the protection from the referees he didn't have back then, he would be untouchable.

Those who say Messi scores more goals......remember they had different roles and played in different positions. Maradona was more of a creator than Messi, who is more a striker.

Maradona is a god in Argentina. As good as he is....Messi still is an apprentice who may one day become another Maradona.

Messi has 63 club goals this season, all time record is 67 from Gerd Muller. For club and country, the record is 75 from Pele. Messi has 68...hmm, can he do it in 8 games remaining?

Pele's club career numbers was mostly Harlem Globetrotters stuff. Exhibitions around the World and then in the North American soccer league. No comparisons to the level of Gerd Mueller -Messi or Ronaldo.

Crazy to think how Heskey has scored 86 league goals in over 500 league games, and both of these guys can nearly do that in 38 games. Amazing.

Rumours linking Ronaldo to Man City with Mourinho next season... this would be a HUGE story!

Messi should stay where he is if he wants legs. He will be hacked to pieces in England, though it would be unreal if he could make a succesful transition... Ronaldo has already proven he can do it

Messi still for me is the messiah

It seems these days the best players in the world are judged on how many goals they score....

It's not just about scoring goals.......the classic no 10 is not just about scoring goals, it's also about creating play and assists......basic football knowledge.

And it's not just about forwards. If that's the case then guys like Beckenbauer, Zidane, Rummenige, Platini, even Hatzipanagis, etc, were average because they didn't score anywhere near as many goals as these guys?

I dont think that is what Chris meant at all. Today though which midfielder could be ranked anywhere near to what Messi and Ronaldo have and are still achieving ?

I realise this is the Messi vs ronaldo thread, but to answer your question no midfielder TODAY is as good as these two.

But the comparisons are also about players of the past and many seem to think these two are the best ever......I don't think they are (yet).

It's an unfair comparison. Unless you have seen all the greats of the past, I don't think you are qualified to pass judgement.

Thats a good point, i can only judge from Diego onwards.

1 thing bugs me though Jerry about what you said. You say Messi has overtaken Diego at club level...ok in honours yes, but wouldnt it be nice to see if he could do it in an average team like he did and not the best club team ever?

True......the only success Napoli has had in serie a was when Maradona was there. If they put me up forward in the current Barcelona team, I reckon I'd probably score a couple of goals as well laugh.gif

Argentina won the 86 WC with a fairly average team, and nearly won the 90 WC as well. Maradona was the sole reason they achieved this.

Portugal over the past 10 years had a very good team......but Ronaldo's presence hasn't brought them any honours. And Messi to date hasn't done much for Argentina. A bit like Raoul, a fantastic player at club level, but never reached the same heights for the NT.

When Messi or Ronaldo dominate a WC like Maradona and Pele (and even Zidane and the Brazilian Ronaldo) did, then we can speak about these players in the same breath.
