Greece U-21 significantly improved their chances of qualifying for the 2011 U-21 European Championships by defeating England's U-21 side 2-1 at Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster on Wednesday.
Olympiacos starlets Kyriakos and Giannis Papadopoulos scored the goals to give Greece manager Giorgos Georgiadis his first win as manager after taking over from Nikos Nioplias when the latter was hired by Panathinaikos FC.
While Nathan Delfouneso responded for England, it was ultimately too little too late for Stuart Pearce's side as the English appear to be on their way to the play-off round.
The Greeks are now five points clear at the top of Group nine and are favourites to grab the only automatic qualifying spot for the final tournament.
Greece meets FYROM in Prilep with a win assuring them of top spot in the section regardless of England's results.
The Young Lions, with two games in hand on the Greeks, face Portugal and Lithuania in their remaining fixtures and require two wins as well as a Greece slip if they are to finish atop the group standings.
