AEK Athens FC opened their tour of Australia with a thrilling 5-3 defeat of local side Sydney FC to kick-off Sydney's Festival of Football, which also includes Scottish Champions Rangers and the Premier League's Blackburn Rovers.
Five different scorers found the back of the net for AEK with Leonardo, Nikos Liberopoulos, Ismael Blanco, Ignacio Scocco, and Pantelis Kafes scoring for the Athenian giants. Sydney replied through a brace from Alex Brosque and a solo effort from Ibrahima Thiam, but it appeared Sydney were overwhelmed by the visiting side's vocal supporters.
Thousands of AEK fans packed the stadium as AEK's Australian community came together to cheer on the Enosi. AEK fans will reconvene when their side returns to action against Blackburn on Tuesday.
The other match on the day saw Rangers defeat Blackburn 2-1 with Maurice Edu scoring the decisive goal in Sydney. The tournament standings, which operate with three points for a win, one for a draw, and a further point for each goal scored, sees AEK emerge at the top with eight points while Rangers have five.
