Atromitos FC pulled off a shock win against Olympiacos FC on Sunday as the Asteri seemingly cruised to a 3-1 defeat of the league leaders in Peristeri. Ilias Anastasakos and Henri Camara restored Atromitos’ lead after Francois Modesto had cancelled out Stelios Sfakianakis’ opener.

Knowing that a defeat could spark trouble in their bid to remain in the top flight, Atromitos started on the offensive and quickly secured a breakthrough after a lapse in defense by Olympiacos stand-in center-back Giannis Potouridis. The Greek prospect mistakenly headed the ball into the path of Sfakianakis, who routinely collected the loose ball and slotted home an easy finish past ‘keeper Balazs Megyeri.

Olympiacos would respond shortly after the half hour mark as Modesto headed home a leveller on 34 minutes, but the score wouldn’t remain deadlocked as Atromitos reclaimed their lead through Anastasakos just three minutes later. It was another defensive lapse that contributed to the goal as Megyeri was left stranded while the unorganized Olympiacos looked on.

Olympiacos manager Ernesto Valverde deemed this match to be a chance for Olympiacos’ youth to show their worth; however, the visitors’ problems turned worse as Camara extended Atromitos’ lead to 3-1 after the restart. Yet another mistake in the Olympiacos defense allowed the Senegalese striker to roam free inside the Olympiacos box and slot home a finish past Megyeri.

The final whistle was greeted by jubilation from the home fans as Atromitos officially staved off relegation with news Asteras Tripolis FC lost in Athens against Panathinaikos FC. The Asteri will now look forward to their final league fixture at home against FC Kavala before preparing for the Greek Cup Final against AEK Athens FC.

Olympiacos meanwhile will look to return to the win column in their season finale at home to Larissa FC. The Erythrolefki are undefeated at the Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium and will be looking to put on a strong performance in front of the home crowd ahead of the club’s end of match fiesta.
