Ergotelis FC is a Greek football club based in Heraklion, the largest city, and capital of the Greek Island of Crete. Ergotelis was established on the 7th of July 1929 by Greeks refugees from Asia Minor who had moved to Heraklion after the Asia Minor Disaster. The name itself, Ergotelis, was that of a famous Cretan Olympics winner.
Rivalry with OFI - Ergotelis was the best team in Heraklion for several years until during the Greek junta, the then minister for sport presented a law that took all the best players from Ergotelis and moved them to OFI for no fee since OFI was viewed as an indigenous club and it wasn't deemed acceptable to be second best to a team formed from Greek refugees: Ergotelis. Since then OFI became the bitter enemy of Ergotelis supporters, although OFI fans always supported Ergotelis when in the lower divisions. Interestingly the first ever game between Ergotelis and OFI (friendly 1929) ended after 35 minutes with Ergotelis ahead by one goal, when the game had to be abandoned after violence between the players broke out.
