About four decades ago two clubs from Xanthi decided to combine their powers in order to create a "super-club" that could compete against local power-houses such as Kavala and Doxa Dramas. It was the year 1967 that Xanthi was born. Xanthi was fortunate right from the start as the club did not have to compete in the local championships but began their quest in the B' Division of the Greek soccer league. Laws at the present time were on Xanthi's favor and that is where the club's adventure started.
Xanthi's dream was to get promoted to the A' Division of the Greek soccer league and join the "club" of the so called "big" teams in the Greek soccer scene. For 23 years Xanthi met glory and sorrow as they went up and down the ladder in the B' and C' Division of the Greek league but the club's management never gave up hoping for the dream to become a reality. If 1967 was a major point in time for Xanthi, 1990 and 1993 were two other one's as well.
Thodoros Kokkalas was at the club's helm since 1985 and with his co-workers lived and breathed Xanthi in the B' and C' Division. Persistence paid off as Xanthi was promoted in the A' Division in the 1989-1990 season having Tasos Anastasiadis as their coach.
Some internationals that played for Xanthi are: Nikos Alavantas, Marinos Ouzounidis, Elias Talikriadis, Neochoritis, Marinakis, Panidis, Chatziefremidis, Chatzitheodorou, Lemonidis, Kriezis, Mpertos, kotzamanis, Kiriaklidis, Adamopoulos, Melissopoulos, Giourgousis, Kostenoglou, and Maladenis.
